Community Foods Consignment

Gardeners can sell any amount of produce from three bunches of onions to 30 pounds of potatoes!
Community Foods Consignment provides a selling structure for home gardeners and very small farmers to sell what they grow.

For home gardeners, selling excess produce can be a great way to make a few dollars. This money can be used to subsidize gardening efforts or provide a little extra household income. Presently approximately 5-8 home gardeners consign produce to the Food Bank and through the help of volunteers that produce is sold at the Santa Cruz River Farmers’ Market and the Community Food Bank Farmers’ Markets.

For very small farmers the Collective is an opportunity to benefit from direct farmers’ market sales without having to sell at the market yourself. Currently, the produce is sold on a consignment basis at the Food Banks two farmers markets and in the future we plan to expand to other direct markets including schools, the Value Food Store Mobile Market and Snak Paks.

Community Foods Structure and Guidelines

  • Your produce must be grown in Arizona and it cannot be resale. (A gardener could not go to a farm, buy watermelons, and re-sell them at the farmers market).
  • Please be honest about how your produce is grown. We strongly encourage gardeners to not use chemical pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers as it is better for the gardener, the consumer and the earth – however this is not required.
  • Discuss with the Community Foods Coordinator, Amanda Morse (contact information below), what you are interested in selling and fill out agreement form.
  • Bring properly packaged/ washed produce (see post harvest instructions sheet) to the Community Food Bank Wednesdays 9am-1pm or to the Santa Cruz River Farmers’ Market between 3:00 and 3:30.Provide us with an invoice which includes the amount (quantity or weight) of each item. The pricing of your items will reflect the going market price.
  • We will keep track of what sold at the market and send you a check for what was sold, minus 10% (which will be kept by the Food Bank for selling the produce at the market). If there are any leftover items there are three options:1. You can pick up your items at the end of the market Thursday evening or the following morning at the Food Bank.2. We can keep the items and try to sell it at our Tuesday market at the Food Bank.3. We can donate the items to a Food Bank agency.
